PALS Provider Course

Course Description:

The goal of the PALS course is to aid the pediatric healthcare provider in developing the knowledge and skills necessary to efficiently and effectively manage critically ill and injured children. Content covered in this course will be: pediatric assessment, recognition and management of respiratory distress and failure, and recognition and management of shock. Providers are given skills to recognize and treat infants and children at risk for cardiopulmonary arrest; the systematic approach to pediatric assessment, effective respiratory management; defibrillation and synchronized cardioversion; intraosseous access and fluid bolus administration; and effective resuscitation team dynamics.
 

The course covers:

 

  • One and two-rescuer child CPR and AED use
  • One and two-rescuer infant CPR
  • Management of respiratory emergencies
  • Rhythm disturbances and electrical therapy
  • Vascular access
  • Resuscitation team concept
  • Cardiac, respiratory and shock case discussions and simulations
  • Systematic Approach to Pediatric Assessment

Intended Audience:

Those individuals that are currently active as personnel staffing emergency, Pediatricians, house staff, emergency physicians, family physicians, nurses, paramedics, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare providers who are responsible for the well-being of infants and children. Primarily healthcare providers who initiate and direct advanced life support in pediatric emergencies.

Course Prerequisite:

  1. Current AHA BLS provider card
  2. Current 2015 AHA PALS provider manual
  3. Pre-course self-assessment
  4. Pre-course checklist

Course Length:

14 hours (This is a two day course, attendance for both days required for completion)

Course Exams:

PALS provider exam must be passed with score of 84% or better. Provider skills testing must be completed and graded with a “Passing” score.
